Glucose Challenge Test
The Glucose Challenge Test (GCT) is a simple screening test performed during pregnancy to check for gestational diabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels become elevated during pregnancy. Early detection is important because uncontrolled gestational diabetes can increase the risk of complications for both the mother and the baby.
The test is usually recommended between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, although it may be performed earlier for women with certain risk factors, such as obesity, a family history of diabetes, or a previous history of gestational diabetes.
During the procedure, the expectant mother drinks a glucose solution containing a measured amount of sugar. After one hour, a blood sample is collected to measure the body’s response to glucose. No fasting is generally required for the initial Glucose Challenge Test. If the results are higher than the normal range, your doctor may recommend a more detailed Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) for confirmation.
