A baby develops inside its mother in the uterus, commonly known as the womb. A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which a woman's uterus is removed. A salpingo-oophorectomy is the term for the procedure in which the ovaries and fallopian tubes are occasionally also removed. A minimally invasive technique called a laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy (LH) involves removing the uterus while leaving the cervix unharmed. The lower, thin end of the womb is known as the cervix. After having a hysterectomy, a woman can no longer get pregnant and will no longer have periods. The patient generally receives general anaesthetic throughout the surgery. A few tiny abdominal incisions around or in the vicinity of the belly button will be made by your surgeon. Through one of these incisions, a tiny tool called a laparoscope that has a light and camera at the tip is introduced. To assist the surgeon in viewing the interior pelvic organs, the pictures from the camera are presented on a monitor.
