Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, are surgically removed in a process termed a myomectomy. These common benign tumors develop in the uterus. Although they can happen at any age, uterine fibroids typically form during the years of childbirth. The purpose of a myomectomy is to remove fibroids that are causing symptoms while reconstructing the uterus. A myomectomy, as opposed to a hysterectomy, leaves your uterus intact while simply removing the fibroids. Myomectomy patients experience fewer fibroid symptoms, such as pelvic discomfort and heavy menstrual flow, after surgery. If you have fibroids that are bothersome or interfere with your typical activities, your doctor may advise a myomectomy. Many women with uterine leiomyomas already have low blood counts (anemia) as a result of frequent menstrual bleeding, making them more susceptible to complications from blood loss if you need surgery. Before surgery, your doctor might advise measures to increase your blood count. Surgeons take great precautions to prevent excessive bleeding during myomectomy. These may involve injecting drugs near fibroids to force blood vessels to constrict and stopping blood flow from the uterine arteries using tourniquets and clamps. But the majority of measures don't lower the likelihood of requiring a transfusion.
