Laparoscopy for infertility is a minimally invasive surgical treatment in which the surgeon examines the pelvic anatomy for causes of female infertility using a telescope-like tool (laparoscope) with light and a small camera. Laparoscopy can be used to diagnose infertility by examining the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Surgical therapy for abnormalities discovered during a diagnostic laparoscopy procedure is performed using small surgical tools passed through the laparoscope. Scar tissue or endometriosis can also be removed with laparoscopic surgery. The abdomen is inflated with gas (injected with a needle with carbon dioxide or nitrous oxide) to shift the organs away from the abdominal wall and make them visible during the surgery. The laparoscope is introduced through the tiny incisions once the abdomen has been inflated. The surgeon uses a video screen to observe the interior of the pelvic cavity.
